Mozambique has access to a fund of 116 million meticais, provided by the Belgian development agency Enabel Mozambique, to finance projects aimed at protecting and safeguarding the environment. The amount will be allocated between 2024 and 2027, specifically for initiatives combating climate change or accelerating the energy transition.
According to the project manager, Vicente Matsinhe, who recently spoke at a dissemination meeting for the Operations and Procedures Manual of the financing mechanism, the funds are expected to support activities promoting greater knowledge of climate change topics and innovative solutions to address related challenges.
“This project focuses on issues affecting the most vulnerable communities and recognizes that many aspects of climate change are still unknown. We aim to promote more knowledge and collaboration between the public and private sectors,” said Matsinhe. Priority areas include access to water, loss and damage, energy, and waste management—sectors facing significant challenges and requiring increased mobilization of climate financing to mitigate their impacts.
Samuel Buvane, Assistant Coordinator for Climate Financing at Enabel, stated that the funds could also be used for activities such as studies, research, seminars, consultancy, and training.
“The resulting studies and information will be disseminated for the benefit of all, encouraging more effective collaboration between stakeholders and the general public,” assured Buvane.
Anacleta Chiangua, representing the Climate Financing Office of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, emphasized the importance of such initiatives for deepening mechanisms for project implementation.
“We hope this will be the first step in a continuous interaction that will lead to other phases of disseminating different initiatives. We are optimistic that these meetings will culminate in the submission of relevant and high-quality proposals for safeguarding the environment,” said Chiangua.
The agency is committed to supporting communities nationwide, especially in provinces facing the greatest climate change challenges.
Through this project, Enabel aims to lay the groundwork for attracting additional resources and ensuring sustainable impacts, using limited resources efficiently and rationally.
