Several neighborhoods in the city and province of Maputo woke up on Monday to a calm atmosphere but without public passenger transport, due to fears of potential violent demonstrations on the day the Constitutional Council is set to validate and proclaim the results of the October 9 elections.
Residents traveling from suburban neighborhoods to the city center or other destinations are forced to walk or rely on open-bed vehicles, which are circulating with limited frequency.
With fewer public transport and official staff vehicles on the roads, the usual Monday and festive season traffic congestion is absent. However, markets, supermarkets, and warehouses experienced heavy activity over the weekend.
