Edmilsa Governo ran in the semi-finals of the 100-metre dash in the visually impaired T12 category in the Paralympic Games last Friday but failed to qualify for the final.
The Mozambican runner improved her personal time yet again however, breaking the African record in the specialty twice in Rio de Janeiro.
Edmilsa went to Rio as the holder of the African 100-metres record at 12.70 seconds, and on her debut set a new 12.65 seconds record despite coming home last.
Qualified for the semi-final with the sixth-fastest time among the eleven athletes in the competition, Mozambique’s 18-year-old again broke the African record at Engenhão stadium, crossing the line in 12.35 seconds.
She recorded the fifth-fastest time among the eight athletes in the race, but her third place finish in the second semi-final was not enough to get her into her first Olympic final.
Gold went to the Cuban Omara Durand, who took the world record down to 11.40 seconds. Silver was claimed by Azerbaijan athlete Elena Chebanu (11.71 seconds) and bronze went to Germany’s Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt (11.99 seconds).
Governo has still to compete in the 400-metres, with the first round scheduled for Thursday 15 September. She holds the African record for the distance at 56.62 seconds.
The Mozambican still holds African records for the 200 metres (25.62 seconds) and the 800 metres (2.20 minutes), times which nevertheless fall short of the Paralympic minimum.
