State-owned power utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced yesterday that electricity has been restored to 90,000 customers affected by Cyclone Chido in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces in the north of Mozambique, and in Zambézia in the centre of the country.
In a press release, EDM clarified that 110,000 customers remained without electricity in the districts of Pemba, Mecufe, Metuge, Montepuez, Ancuabe, Chiúre, Quissanga and Ibo in Cabo Delgado province; in Morrumbala and Dere in Zambézia; and in Maúa, Metarica and Nipepe in Niassa.
“EDM technical teams are on the ground, intervening in the network to gradually restore the system. However, the weather conditions and the inaccessibility of some locations have been the biggest obstacles and have contributed to the delay in restoring the electricity supply,” the company clarified in the statement.
Around 200,000 customers in Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces have at some stage been without electricity due to the effects of Cyclone Chido, according to information released on Sunday by EDM.
