At least 130 people have died and 385 people have been shot in post-election protests in Mozambique since October 21, according to an update issued yesterday (15-12) by the ‘Decide’ electoral monitoring platform.
According to the report by the NGO, from October 21 to December 15, there have been 3,636 arrests, five people are missing and more than 2,000 have been injured in protests contesting the announced results of the general elections of October 9 called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
In recent days, the most publicized case was that of a young man who was shot while filming live footage of police operations against protesters at the border crossing in Ressano Garcia, Maputo province, and who died in hospital on Thursday night.
The footage sparked popular outrage in the hours that followed, with protesters setting fire to infrastructure, while on Saturday, during the young man’s funeral, new clashes with the police were recorded.
The young man, an internet content producer, was live on the social network Facebook when he was shot, saying, a few minutes later, “I’m dying” amidst shouts from locals and the sound of more gunshots.
Lusa tried unsuccessfully to contact the Police of the Republic of Mozambique for comment.
The results of the October 9 elections announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) gave victory to Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo, with 70.67% of the vote, but this result still needs to be validated by the Constitutional Council, the final court of appeal in electoral disputes.
In one of his last live broadcasts on the social network Facebook, Mondlane promised to be in Maputo to take office as President of Mozambique on January 15, the date scheduled for the inauguration of the new head of state.
