A large fire broke out in a coal processing area at Vulcan Moçambique’s Moatize mine in Tete on Saturday afternoon. The fire was caused by sparks from welding work falling onto chemical products, according to a statement from Vulcan.
The fire started in an area called Plant 2, where coal is processed, and quickly spread due to highly combustible chemical products present in the same area.
Vulcan’s firefighters successfully isolated the fire, preventing it from spreading further, without the need to call in SENSAP emergency services.
A Vulcan Moçambique statement clarified: “Vulcan acknowledges that on the afternoon of Saturday, December 14, a fire was recorded in one of the operational areas while welding work was being carried out. The incident was caused by the accidental falling of sparks onto a chemical product. Thanks to the rapid intervention of our emergency teams, the fire was quickly controlled, with no injuries or material damage reported.”
The financial cost of the fire has not yet been calculated.
