Those convicted in the “hidden debts” trials and held in Lingamo Penitentiary on the old Matola road, are in a panic, Carta de Moçambique reports. On Monday night, the National Director of Penitentiary Operations, Ramos Zambuco, informed them that they would probably all be transferred to the Machava Penitentiary, the so-called ‘Cadeia Central’
Zambuco was not fully clear in his information, nor did he say when the measure would be implemented, but the possibility of a transfer from Língamo to Machava was not well received by those concerned.
In the current climate of political and social tension in Mozambique, there are rumours and calls for the penitentiaries to be invaded. The prisons of Morrumbala (Zambezia) and Chibuto (Gaza) have in recent days been broken into by protesters, releasing dozens of prisoners, some serving long sentences for murder and robbery.
In the case of the “hidden debt” prisoners, one of the fears of those targeted is that, in Machava prison, they may be subject to violence and abuse. Within the current context of social unrest, attacks on figures linked to the political elite – even those convicted of corruption – are commonplace.
Among the “hidden debt” defendants who were transferred to Língamo in June 2019 are Ndambi Guebuza, Bruno Tandane, Teófilo Nhangumele, Gregório Leão, António Carlos Rosário and Fabião Mabunda.
