At least 14 people were killed, and another six suffered serious and minor injuries in a road accident in Morrumbene district, Inhambane province, in the south of Mozambique, the police said on Friday.
“The accident took place at around 08:00 a.m., resulting in 14 deaths and six injuries and extensive material damage,” Nércia Bata, head of PRM public relations at the Inhambane Provincial Command, told Lusa.
Of the six people injured in the accident, five are still in a serious condition and only one had minor injuries.
According to the spokeswoman, the accident, which involved a semi-collective passenger transport vehicle and a cargo lorry, “was caused by excessive speed, associated with a tyre blow-out”.
“The passenger transport was travelling southwards when one of the tyres burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle,” he concluded.
The number of deaths in road accidents in Mozambique fell by 5% in the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2023, but there are still an average of two deaths a day on Mozambican roads, official figures show.
According to a report by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, there were 310 road accidents in the first six months of the year, compared to 357 in the same period last year, a reduction of 13%.
These accidents caused 366 deaths compared to 387 in 2023 (-5%), and 271 serious injuries, down by 8% year-on-year.
In the first six months of this year, the roads in Inhambane province and Gaza (south) were the deadliest, with 55 and 46 deaths, respectively, followed by Nampula (45) in the north and Maputo city (43).
