Mozambique: International reserves grow in December after two months of falls

India once again topped the list of Mozambique’s export destinations in the first half of the year, taking 19.8%, at a value of US$763.2 million.
According to Bank of Mozambique data on foreign trade, India bought mainly natural gas and coal, Mozambique’s two main export products, but also beans and cashew nuts.
South Africa, with 16% of total exports, valued at US$617.8 million, retained second place in purchases from Mozambique, especially electricity, natural gas, coal and bananas.
China rose to third place, with purchases of US$470.7 million from January to June, 12.2% of total exports, mainly natural gas, heavy sands and coal.
In the first half of the year, Mozambique’s total exports amounted to US$3,851.4 million, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2023.
In the opposite direction, imports by Mozambique fell by 2.6% year-on-year to US$4,210.3 million. Purchases from South Africa led with 24.6% of the total, amounting to US$1,034.6 million, mainly electricity, vehicles for transporting goods, iron bars and corn.
China was second, with a total weight of 16.2%, worth US$682.2 million, supplying tractors, pesticides, heavy machinery and vehicles for transporting goods.
In third place was Singapore, with a weight of 7.1%, standing out in the supply of fuel, tar and petroleum bitumen, cement and rice, among other products, to a value of US$299.9 million.
