Maputo Municipal Council today (03-12) called a press conference to discuss the impact of the ongoing post-election protests in the country.
“We have been witnessing a scenario of great destruction of public property and infrastructure. This infrastructure is ours. We must take care of what is ours and not destroy it,” began Mayor of Maputo, Rasaque Manhique.
According to Mayor Manhique, protest is a right of all Mozambicans, but when it does not comply with the law, it causes harm to the city.
“The barricades that we have been seeing in our city are seriously hindering the provision of basic services that we all should enjoy,” Manhique said.
Regarding waste management, Manhique remarked that the city of Maputo produces around 1.3 tonnes of waste per day and stressed that it was difficult to collect it in the circumstances.
“Collecting this amount of rubbish requires hard work from everyone involved in the process,” the mayor said, explaining that “the [prolonged] presence of solid waste [on the streets] contributes to the spread of disease”.
Manhique appealed to residents in the capital to make the provision of basic services possible by not joining protests or erecting barricades on public roads.
