Mozambique: CTA board opens way for Massingue to run in internal election - Watch
The flow of imported vehicles at the Matchedje border, in Niassa province’s Sanga district, is increasing.
On average, more than 200 vehicles imported from Asia, Europe and elsewhere via the port of Dar-es-Salam in Tanzania cross the border there every month.
Director of Customs in Niassa, Viriato Agostinho, said that the circulation of these vehicles renders the state revenue of 17 to 20 million meticais per month.
The official points to terrorism in Cabo Delgado and the proximity of Matchedje to the port as the reasons why vehicle importers prefer the crossing.
Considering that the Unango-Matchedje road is therefore a strategic route for state revenue, Agostinho urges the National Road Administration to keep it well-maintained.
Niassa provincial National Road Administration delegate Oreste Zezela replies that the road is indeed a maintenance priority, but that the lack of funds is the main obstacle.
