The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) says that expired and spoiled products are regularly being sold in shops in Mozambique, as well as there being price speculation in the main markets in Maputo province.
The finding resulted from a recent monitoring and inspection operation undertaken to assess the availability of food products in the markets.
INAE National Inspectorate of Economic Activities delegate in Maputo, João Itai, outlined to Radio Mozambique the risks to consumers.
“We all know that some economic agents do this in bad faith; they sell expired or even spoiled products, and no inspection is carried out on site. Also, because of the crisis, the population ends up buying and consuming products that can have a negative effect on their health,” he said.
