In the third quarter, Mozambique surpassed the target of 200,000 new household connections to the electricity grid and went ahead with the first 40 kilometres of the high-voltage line that will connect the north and south of the country.
According to data from the budget execution of the third quarter in the Energy sector, regarding the expansion of electricity in the national territory, “202,213 household connections were established, through the national electricity grid, corresponding to a realisation of 101%, of the plan of 200,000” for those three months (July to September).
The report adds that the first 40 kilometres of the “backbone of the 400 KW high voltage electricity transmission system” was built during this period, which “will connect the north to the south of the country, including the Temane, Maputo, Chimuara-Alto Molócue sections, “corresponding to 100% achievement of the planned target”.
“The transmission line is complete and commissioning for connection is underway,” the document states.
On 2 May, the President of Mozambique set the target of completing the electrification of all administrative post headquarters in the country by December [2024] and ensuring that 10 million Mozambicans have access to electricity for the first time.
Filipe Nyusi stated that, under the “Energy for All” programme, the target was to “enable all administrative post headquarters to be electrified” by “the end of 2024”, after the electrification “of all district headquarters” in the last century.
“Our goal is for the coverage rate [of the country’s population] to reach 64%, ensuring that 10 million Mozambicans have electricity for the first time,” the head of state said.
