The President of Mozambique today praised the professionalism and dedication of the director-general of the Mozambican secret service who died in a traffic accident on Saturday, considering him a “convinced patriot”, whose death is an “irreparable loss” for the country.
“Lidimba was more than just a civil servant, he was a dedicated, tireless, honest, deeply coherent patriot committed to the security of the State, and therefore to the well-being of our country and Mozambicans,” President Nyusi said at the funeral ceremony of the director-general of the State Intelligence and Security Services (SISE) in Maputo City Hall.
Bernardo Tshombe Constantino Libimba died in a traffic accident in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, on Saturday while on a mission, Minister of the Interior Pascoal Ronda announced on the same day.
Filipe Nyusi lamented Lidimba’s “sudden and premature” death, highlighting his “significant contribution” to institutional strengthening and the fight against the armed insurgency in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique.
“Director Tshombe served the Mozambican nation with excellence, always putting national interests above his own, often sacrificing those of his family,” the head of state said.
For the Mozambican president, Bernardo Tshombe Constantino Libimba was also a man of “great values”, who acted with “professionalism and discretion” in always seeking collegial solutions, inspiring his “mostly young” colleagues with his work.
“Bernardo Constantino Lidimba, whom we pay tribute to and bid farewell to today, was, as we have heard, an exemplary public servant, a respected diplomat and a staunch patriot,” declared Nyusi, asking that every Mozambican continue his work.
According to Minister Ronda, one of the passengers was injured in the traffic accident, which involved skidding and overturning.
“Measures are currently underway to determine the circumstances in which the accident occurred (…). More details about the incident will be provided later,” Minister Ronda also said.
Bernardo Lidimba was appointed to the position of Director-General of SISE by President Filipe Nyusi on May 31, 2022, replacing Júlio dos Santos Jane.
