The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday sent a message of congratulations to the President-elect of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko, on the election held on 30 October 2024.
The election will determine the composition of the 13th parliament of the SADC country, where the victory of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) party was confirmed and declared winner by a comfortable majority.
In the message, the Head of State considers that the “remarkable and historic” victory of the UDC party demonstrates the confidence that the Tswana people place in the commitment to lead them towards achieving their aspirations for development, progress and well-being, safeguarding the interests of the nation, both internally and internationally.
“The peaceful, orderly and transparent environment in which the elections took place paved the way for a free and fair vote, which demonstrates the maturity of democracy. Therefore, on behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, I extend our warmest congratulations to Your Excellency and the people of Botswana, as well as my sincere wishes for success in the performance of this noble role,” the message reads.
President Nyusi goes on to state that while he hopes for success in his new role, he is prepared to “work closely with President Boko to strengthen relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between Mozambique and Botswana, both bilaterally and multilaterally within the framework of SADC, the African Union, the Commonwealth, the United Nations and other international organisations of which we are a part”.
