On the morning of Thursday, October 31, Nacala Porto (Nampula province) seemed to be calm – but such an impression would have been mistaken.
It began in neighbourhoods such as Mathapué, in the streets of Sonho Real, Kuanza, and Mercado Edrissa, where there were standoffs between residents and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
Residents threw stones at the PRM officers supposedly maintaining public order and tranquillity. The police responded with tear gas and shooting into the air, and the population fled.
In a tit-for-tat, residents barricaded various different roads and junctions (Edrissa, Mathapué, the Mathapue traffic lights), and burned tires, turning the roads black.
In Nacala-Porto’s Juma market
Attempting to quell the popular rebellion at the Juma Market in Nacala-Porto, the Rapid Intervention Police fired several random shots into the community surrounding the market.
This took place around 1:00 pm, when a group of young teenagers and children were demonstrating on the street. When they saw the police, they scattered into the community surrounding the market.
The police fired tear gas into the neighbourhoods, knowing full well that, most of the houses being of precarious construction, this could spark a wave of fires.
