The Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) announced on Friday that it had arrested 371 people across the country as a result of protests on Thursday and this morning, with clashes between police authorities and demonstrators.
“A total of 371 individuals were arrested and 44 criminal cases were drawn up and sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings,” said PRM spokesman Orlando Mudumane, speaking to the media, in an assessment of police action in the face of Thursday’s demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.

Venâncio Mondlane has called for two days of national “peaceful” stoppages and demonstrations in Mozambique from Thursday, coinciding with the release of the election results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
“We’re going to sacrifice two days of our lives so that we can all demonstrate. And we don’t need to inform the police, the municipality,” announced Venâncio Mondlane, adding that “the country must stand still for these two days”.
On Thursday, the CNE announced Daniel Chapo’s victory, supported by the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), in the election for President of the Republic on 9 October, with 70.67% of the vote.
Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the non-parliamentary Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), came second with 20.32%.
In third place was Ossufo Momade, president of Renamo, the largest opposition party until now, with 5.81%, followed by Lutero Simango, president of the MDM, with 3.21%.
The results were announced on the first of two days of general strikes and demonstrations called by candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who is contesting the results of this year’s elections. The demonstrations were marked by clashes between demonstrators and the police on the main avenues of the Mozambican capital.
