Several dozen people gathered this morning at the funeral chapel of Maputo Central Hospital for the wake of Paulo Guambe, leader of the Podemos party and a top aide to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
The ceremony, for one of the victims of Friday’s double homicide in Maputo, was taking place without incident at the same time that the funeral procession of lawyer Elvino Dias, lawyer of Venâncio Mondlane, the other victim, was leaving from the same place for the funeral site, located on the outskirts of the Mozambican capital, escorted by motorcyclists and police.

Paulo Guambe, electoral agent (mandatário) of the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), of which he was a founding member, was a teacher, scriptwriter, producer and director.
The burial of Paulo Guambe is to take place in the Jangamo cemetery, in the southern province of Inhambane, on Thursday.
The funeral of the legal advisor to Mozambican presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, Elvino Dias, took place today in Maputo, amid calls from the politician for mass participation “without disturbances” and from the Mozambican Bar Association for its members to wear their robe to attend the funeral service.
The lawyer was shot dead on Friday night in the centre of Maputo, together with Paulo Guambe, and Venâncio Mondlane called on Mozambicans to “participate en masse” in the funeral.
“I would really like this youth to go peacefully. We will not cause disturbances, calmly, we will be in force at the last farewell to Elvino Dias”, he appealed, in a public statement he made on Monday through his social media account.
The Mozambican Bar Association issued a statement setting a meeting point for lawyers and trainee lawyers to then go to the funeral venue, asking them to wear “professional attire”.
Elvino Dias’ wake took place at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the funeral was scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Michafutene cemetery in Maputo.
The Mozambican police confirmed to Lusa on Saturday that the vehicle in which the victims were travelling, who were shot dead, had been “ambushed”.
The crime, as well as the challenge to the provisional results of the general elections of 9 October, led Venâncio Mondlane to call for peaceful marches in Mozambique on Monday, which were dispersed by strong police action, with shots fired into the air and tear gas, and the clashes caused at least 16 injuries in Maputo, according to a hospital source.
The police response to the demonstrations was condemned by the international community and there were several calls for restraint from both sides, namely Portugal, the European Union and the African Union.
The elections included the seventh presidential elections, simultaneously with legislative elections and elections for provincial assemblies and governors.
The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has 15 days to announce the official results, which is due to be Thursday, October 24th. The Constitutional Council will then be responsible for announcing the results, after also concluding the analysis of any appeals, but without a set deadline for this purpose.
