The Frelimo party could have 193 [of the 250] seats in the Assembly of the Republic, Mozambique’s parliament, and the opposition parties, all together, will have 57. Calculations based on the provisional results show a more diverse parliament, with the entry of PODEMOS, but with an opposition with little power to influence.
Using the D’Hondt method referred to in Article 170 of the Electoral Law as the basis for calculating mandates in parliament, O País analysed the numbers, which show a historic change in the composition of the Assembly of the Republic.
According to the provisional results, Frelimo achieved numbers never before seen in the multi-party parliament [whose first elections were held in 1994, 30 years ago] .

Frelimo had more deputies elected from the Zambézia constituency, where 33 parliamentarians were elected, while Renamo had six and Podemos had three deputies. It should be noted that Zambézia has 42 seats, making it the second largest electoral district in the country, after Nampula province.
In fact, in Nampula province, Frelimo had less dominance. The province of Nampula had 30 elected deputies from Frelimo, against ten for Podemos and six for Renamo. The MDM secured two seats.
The lowest numbers for the ruling party were achieved in the city of Maputo, but in Maputo province the number of seats is also low.
In Maputo, Frelimo managed to elect seven deputies, against two for Podemos and one for Renamo. The MDM did not have any deputies. In fact, in addition to Nampula province, the MDM only had two deputies in Manica province.
Thus, the provisional data indicate 193 deputies for Frelimo, 31 for Podemos, 20 for Renamo and four for the MDM.
According to the same data, parliament could have four benches.
However, with these numbers, Frelimo has the power even to revise the Constitution of the Republic without needing the consent of the opposition, which, although more diverse, is increasingly losing strength in the Assembly of the Republic.
It should be recalled that, in the 2019 elections, the ruling party had elected 184 deputies, Renamo 60 and the MDM six.
These results are still provisional. They are yet to be approved by the National Elections Commission (CNE) and validated by the Constitutional Council.
