The Civil Society Platform for Electoral Monitoring (DECIDE) is requesting the annulment of the elections in parts of Mozambique where there is evidence to justify such a measure or the need for a repeat with more rigorous monitoring.
A group from DECIDE led by social activist Wilker Dias is at the headquarters of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, The Gambia, to request the intervention of that body in the first instance.
Wilker Dias announced on Monday (14-10), through his official Facebook page, that many Mozambicans were unable to exercise their right to vote because their names had already been filled in [at the voting tables]. In other places, according to Dias, the ballot papers were exhausted before even half of the voters had reached the voting station.
He pointed out that, in some parts of the country, especially in the central and northern regions, many Mozambicans had their names changed [misspelt] on the electoral rolls, making it impossible for them to exercise their right to vote.
“As such, we are recording some situations that lead us to believe that ballot box stuffing is a reality. For this reason, we are here in The Gambia to express the concerns of a large number of Mozambicans and request intervention,” Diaz explained.
“In addition, we are raising some complaints related to the entire electoral process, from the campaign to voter registration. To this end, we will have a meeting with the Commissioner for Human Rights for Portuguese-speaking countries and with other structures and governments in Africa. We will also submit documents containing evidence of what happened, the issues and violations that occurred in the electoral process,” Dias said.
The DECIDE platform also explains that there are always violations of the rights of Mozambican citizens in electoral contexts and all of these concerns will be presented to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
“As Mozambican election observers from the DECIDE platform and as a network of young human rights defenders, we will have this entire week to take one of the greatest concerns of the Mozambican people to the appropriate authorities,” Dias said.
