The partial results of the general elections held on October 9th are now known, at least at the provincial level. In addition to the positioning of the presidential candidates and their respective political parties, another important piece of information shared was the level of participation of registered voters in the process.
According to the data shared so far by the electoral bodies, of the more than 17 million voters registered for these elections, almost half, that is, close to 9 million citizens, chose not to vote on October 9th and, of those who decided to exercise their right to vote, just over 300,000 did not vote for anyone, that is, they cast blank votes.
For example, the province of Nampula, the country’s largest electoral district, leads the list, with more than two million abstentions, corresponding to 17%, and has an equally high number of blank votes (52,000).
Zambézia was not far behind. Around 2 million voters skipped the vote and 45,000 cast blank votes.
The province of Cabo Delgado also recorded a high level of abstentions, with 925,000 people absent, 35,000 blank votes and almost 18,000 votes being spoiled.
The provinces of Maputo, Inhambane, Manica, Sofala, Tete and Niassa had abstention numbers ranging from 570,000 to 630,000.
However, in terms of spoiled votes, the province of Manica stands out, with around 54,000 cases, the highest in the entire country.
