Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won last Wednesday’s general elections in Nampula province, the largest of the 11 provincial constituencies, but over 70 per cent of the electorate did not vote.
According to the Nampula Provincial Elections Commission (CPE), announcing the results on Monday, there are 3.2 million registered voters in the province, but only 28.41 per cent went to the polls. Hence there was an abstention rate of almost 74 per cent.
The results announced by the CPE were as follows. The candidates and parties are listed in the order they appeared on the ballot paper. The percentages given are percentages of valid votes cast.
Lutero Simango (MDM): 31,070 (3.67 per cent)

In the third election, for members of the provincial assembly, Frelimo also won, and so the head of its list will become the new provincial governor.
Frelimo won with 59.11 per cent, followed by Podemos (18.89 per cent), Renamo (14.21 per cent) and the MDM (3.97 per cent).
