More than 12,500 voters in the Mozambican province of Zambézia and 670 voters registered in Germany are now expected to cast their ballots in the country’s general elections on Saturday (12-10). The vote should have been held on Wednesday, but failed to take place due to a lack of electoral material, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced this Friday (11-10).
CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica told a press conference in Maputo that, due to a lack of voting kits in Zambézia province, central Mozambique, 19 polling stations in the district of Gilé and four in Maganja da Costa “did not open” on Wednesday.

In Germany, logistical problems with transportation, particularly indelible ink, considered a ‘dangerous cargo’ in that country, delayed the process, and the material only arrived in Berlin on Thursday.
“The CNE held a meeting and decided that these two electoral districts would conclude the voting process on the 12th, which is tomorrow, to allow the 12,503 voters in Zambézia and the 670 voters in Germany to exercise their right to vote,” Cuinica said.
In Zambézia, the polling stations will operate this Saturday between 7:00 and 18:00 local time, with the support of around 200 staff on the ground, and in Germany between 09:00 and 21:00 local time.
Wednesday’s general elections included the seventh presidential elections – in which the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, is no longer running, having reached the constitutional two-term limit – simultaneously with the seventh legislative elections and the fourth elections for provincial assemblies and governors.
The candidates running for President of the Republic in this election are Lutero Simango, supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM, the third largest parliamentary force), Daniel Chapo, with the support of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo, in power since 1975), Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the extra-parliamentary Podemos party, and Ossufo Momade, with the support of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the largest opposition party).
The voting included legislative elections (250 deputies) as well as for provincial assemblies and their respective provincial governors, in this case with 794 seats to be distributed. The CNE approved lists of 35 political parties running for the Assembly of the Republic and 14 political parties and groups of citizens voting for the provincial assemblies.
