The municipal council of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado, has launched a programme titled “Green
Cities and Infrastructures” aimed at improving climate resilience through urban planning.
The project also seeks to enhance drainage and sanitation maintenance, coastal protection,
and erosion control, among other actions related to climate resilience.
The program focuses on constructing low-cost, climate-resilient infrastructures and modernizing urban centres, while simultaneously promoting sustainable economic growth
in the city.
In its first phase, the plan will cover Pemba’s Maringanha and Metula neighbourhoods.
Abdulremane Chaca, the Councillor for Urbanization in the municipality, said that the newly
launched project would render the city’s neighbourhoods better organized, and provide
easier access to various services.
Meanwhile, programme coordinator Ana Chaves emphasized the need for the involvement
of all stakeholders to achieve the programme’s goals.
The Green Cities and Infrastructures programme also includes the municipalities of Beira,
Nacala, and Pemba. The pilot phase of the project in this part of the country is set to last 16
months.
