This Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m., the Mozambique-China Cultural Center in the city of Maputo will host the launch of Mia Couto’s new novel, titled “A cegueira do rio”.
In his new book, Mia Couto sets the story in a village in northern Mozambique, which becomes the stage for an event marking the beginning of World War I on the African continent. The unexpected military incident opens the door to a series of mysterious events that culminate in the disappearance of writing from the world. Books, reports, documents, photographs, and maps appear faded, and no one seems capable of mastering the art of writing anymore. The inhabitants of this village are called upon to restore order to the world, teaching Europeans the craft of writing and the arts of navigation.
