Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday challenged Mozambican businesses to capitalise on the opportunities offered by regional agreements, and the opening to the global economy.
Speaking in Marracuene district, 30 kilometres north of Maputo, at the official opening of the 52nd edition of the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM), Nyusi declared that now is the time to galvanise business, encourage economic partnerships, and strengthen ties between Mozambican companies and the world.
He added that Mozambican companies should take advantage of the contacts they make at FACIM to win new markets.
“FACIM is a moment to assess the economic trajectory of the country and take appropriate decisions to recalibrate the economy, making it realistic by balancing production with consumption, imports with exports, and by ensuring that the growth achieved is reflected in the quality of life of citizens”, said the President.
The success of the trade fair, argued Nyusi, depends on the business deals reached, and the contacts made that can bear fruit. He urged business people to transform the current crisis “into an opportunity to strengthen and diversify the Mozambican economy”.
The government’s message, he continued, had always been to increase production and the quality of Mozambican goods.
Economic growth, Nyusi said, should be inclusive and sustainable, and above all it should benefit ordinary citizens. He raised Mozambican businesses for not giving up in the face of adversities. “They have not remained on the defensive”, he claimed, “they have not fainted, or opted for lamentations, despite the existing constraints”.
He urged each Mozambican company exhibiting at FACIM to discover new forms of producing or of providing services. Were this to be achieved, “the country will be speaking of tangible results and comparative advantages in the growth of businesses, of increased production and productivity, of business volume and company profits”.
This year’s edition of the fair is attended by 33 counties, 630 foreign companies and 2,350 Mozambican businesses.
