On Wednesday, Mozambique deposited the Instrument of Ratification of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
This act, carried out by Deputy-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, formally enters Mozambique into the group of 125 countries that have signed the document.
Gonçalves noted on the occasion that acts of nuclear terrorism could result in more serious consequences and pose a threat to international peace and security.
Under the convention, states must make every effort to adopt measures to ensure the protection of radioactive material, taking into account the recommendations and relevant functions of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The convention was concluded on 13 April, 2005, and opened for signatures on 14 September, 2005. It entered into force on 7 July, 2007.
Mozambique ratified the document in 2010, since when it has been taking steps towards its submission to the United Nations.
Following @UNODC_TPB #CBRN Terrorism Prevention Programme’s visit to Mozambique, funded by 🇨🇦, 🇲🇿 just joined #ICSANT. Parabens! This culminates a decade of cooperation with 🇲🇿on ICSANT, plus 🇪🇺-funded development of training materials in Portuguese.
