Mozambican writer Adelino Albano Luís was awarded this Thursday, September 12, as the grand winner of the 2nd edition of the Prêmio Literário Mia Couto in the prose category, receiving a check for 400,000 meticais from Mia Couto and Cornelder de Moçambique’s CEO, Jan de Vries, during a ceremony held at Casa do Artista in the city of Beira.
The Prize, launched in June 2023, is an initiative of Cornelder in partnership with the Associação Literária Kulemba.
Adelino Luís won this year’s award with his book “Estórias trazidas pela ventania” published by Fundza. The work was distinguished, according to the Prize Jury, “for its thematic richness, linguistic versatility, and consistent construction of the short stories.”
For this 2nd edition of the Mia Couto Literary Prize, the Jury decided, by “unanimity,” as explained on the occasion by Marcelo Panguana, not to award any of the entries in the poetry category, “due to the existence of some weaknesses in their poetic construction, a decision that is provided for in Article 23 of the Prize Regulations.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Cornelder de Moçambique’s Deputy Executive Director, António Libombo, emphasized once again the significance of the Prize, an initiative by CdM in partnership with the Associação Literária Kulemba, bearing Mia Couto’s name, as his “literary trajectory serves as an example” for all Mozambicans. He added that CdM will continue to support the development of culture in the country and congratulated the winner of this 2nd edition, hoping that next year there will be more participants in the Prêmio Literário Mia Couto.
Adelino Albano Luís was born in 1998 in Chimoio, Manica province. He holds a degree in Philosophy from UEM and is also the author of the book “Cronicontos da Cabeça do Velho (2022)”.
