Remote monitoring of traffic violations will begin in Maputo city and province in November, with the completion of the installation of a road traffic monitoring and supervising system.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications initiative, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the amount of US$7 million, is expected to be extended to other provinces, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents nationwide.
This information was shared at a press conference in Maputo yesterday by the chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Road Transport (INATRO), Nelson Nunes.
Nunes explained that the first phase of the project, which consists of the construction of road safety infrastructure such as pedestrian bridges, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, and installing traffic lights and central barriers to prevent illegal crossings, is almost complete.
The civil part included the improvement of critical areas, such as the construction of the roundabout at the intersection to the Boquisso neighbourhood, the Kumbeza pedestrian bridge, and the installation of traffic signs on Avenida da Marginal and at the 7 de Setembro and the 25 de Setembro primary schools.
The INATRO chairman then said that the second phase, including the inauguration of the monitoring system and the installation of cameras in the locations identified, is scheduled for completion in November.
The expansion to other parts of the country will depend on the number of registered road accidents and traffic violations.
He stressed, however, that the expansion depends on the consolidation of the pilot phase, the training of professionals to work at the control centre, and the provision of support for improving service and safety on national roads.
Nunes also believes that the project could contribute to reducing accidents on the Maputo Ring Road. A meeting between the sector and the managers of Maputo Ring Road (operated by REVIMO), called with the aim of finding effective ways to address the current scenario, is imminent.
