Mozambique’s police arrested three people while they were allegedly trying to sell ivory tips in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, a country where poaching is a severe threat to wildlife, an official source said on Thursday.
The three men, aged between 29 and 51, were arrested red-handed on Wednesday afternoon in the district of Marracuene, Samussone Mahumane, spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Maputo province, told Lusa.
‘We had information, through our sources, that there were men with rhino horns for sale, but when we arrived we realised that they were ivory tusk pieces,’ said the spokesman, adding that the provenance is still unknown.
One of the detainees told TV Sucesso ( watch the video below) that the tusk pieces had been dumped in a garbage container, brought to him by a waste picker who had found them.
Poaching in Mozambique has been a serious threat to wildlife, but the authorities estimate that the killing of elephants has decreased in recent years as a result of enforcement and conservation efforts.
According to data from the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), Mozambique has around 10,000 elephants.
