Implementing an initiative for early warning of extreme natural phenomena, a program that brings together the Mozambican national institutes of Communications, Meteorology, Disaster Risk Management and the Red Cross of Mozambique, will cost US$64 million.
Of this amount, US$7.4 million dollars is currently available, earmarked for the financing mechanism for systematic observations.
President Filipe Nyusi, who yesterday launched the National Roadmap for the Early Warnings for All Initiative and the Investment Phase of the Systematic Observations Financing Facility , explained that the first contacts for mobilising funds for the activities of this initiative have already begun.
He also explained that the US$7.4 million already available was allocated by the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Environment Office, and are expected to finance 25 meteorological stations. Of this amount, 21 surface stations will benefit from maintenance work and four will be built from scratch, thus meeting the World Meteorological Organization’s compliance requirements.
The President of the Republic recalled that extreme events in the country cause death and significant material damage, which is why early warning is important. Tropical cyclones affect the entire coast, with a greater incidence in the central and northern regions of the country, which are hit by natural phenomena three to four times annually on average.
Mozambique’s vulnerability to extreme events is due to its geographical location and 2,700 kilometre coastline. In turn, the President of the INGD, Luísa Meque, stated that Mozambique is one of the pilot countries in the implementation of the early warning initiative, launched by the United Nations to reduce the vulnerability of communities in SADC and on the African continent.
For Meque, the choice of Mozambique to host this phase arises from the recognition of the leadership of the President of the Republic in matters of disaster risk management and reduction in the country.
