The government has acknowledged that funding for the general elections is in deficit, but guarantees that the still-missing 13 billion meticais ( aorund 189 million euros) will gradually be allocated to the electoral bodies, to ensure that the polls are held without any problems.
The assurance that the government will provide the missing electoral process funds was delivered on Tuesday by Filimão Suázi, Deputy Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious affairs and also cabinet spokesperson.
“Specifically regarding the financial deficit, I think we have always had this fear in other previous elections, but we have always managed to resolve the problem at the end of the day because the government has committed itself. When I say the government, I am not talking about [only] the one currently in office. I am saying that, since we have been a democratic state under the rule of law, we have never failed elections and, therefore, everything will be done to ensure that this year’s elections do not fail,” said Suazi.
Several other matters were discussed during the session this Tuesday, including the concession of the dry port in Nacala to Malawi, the executive clarifying that everything would be done within the provisions of the law.
“The granting of this concession for the dry port will follow the normal process that all other concessions follow, that is, regulated by Mozambican law,” Suazi said.
Post-Idai reconstruction was also a subject of debate in the Council of Ministers session. Suazi reported that, despite the lack of full disbursement of the necessary funds, some progress had been made.
“All the funds raised are being used to rehabilitate social and other infrastructures, in accordance with the plan approved with the cooperation partners. For example, 5,759 houses have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. 3,269 classrooms out of a total of 4,745 affected have been built or rehabilitated. The response to traffic conditions in all affected sections has been carried out. About 4,154 kilometres of roads and twenty-eight bridges have been repaired.”
The government also expressed concern about deaths caused by road accidents, while noting a reduction in accidents in the first half of this year, when compared to the same period last year.
