Xiquitsi classical music concerts in three Maputo venues from 16 to 22 August
More than 20 Mozambican and Portuguese musicians will perform this week in the second series of concerts by Xiquitsi, a classical music project from Maputo, with more than 1,200 spectators expected, a source from the organization said yesterday.
The concerts of the second series of the Maputo classical music season, from August 16 to 22, will take place at the Mozambique-China Cultural Centre, Montebelo Indy Congress Hotel and the National Library of Mozambique, all venues in the centre of Maputo, the organization told Lusa.
Portugal's Matosinhos String Quartet will for the first time join the 19 students from the Xiquitsi project to perform pieces by Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Heitor Vila-Lobos and Benjamin Britten.
"This season is reserved for string instruments, where classical music will be celebrated with the same purpose as that of Xiquitsi, which is to bring this type of art to the public," the executive director of the Kulungwana Association, responsible for the conception and implementation of the project, told Lusa.
Henny Matos told Lusa that the first series of concerts, in May, brought together 900 spectators, and that the attendance of this second series is expected to be over 1,200.
The Xiquitsi classical music project, currently with 252 students, began in 2012 in Maputo and aims to promote the social inclusion of "disadvantaged young people", as well as "professional training through collective music teaching", thus beginning the formation of the "first classical orchestra in Mozambique", according to the organization.
