The National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Mozambique on Tuesday drew lots for the positions on the ballot paper of the parties running for the general elections of October 9, with the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) coming in first place.
The draw placed the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party, second, and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, third.
The three parties currently represented in parliament occupy the first positions on the ballot paper by law.
“Once the draw has been made, the phase of producing the ballots for President of the Republic, Assembly of the Republic and provincial assemblies will follow,” CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica told the media in Maputo after the draw.
The CNE drew lots for the positions of a total of 37 political parties, on a day when the draw for airtime for electoral propaganda in the media was also held, in a campaign that runs from the 24th of this month until October 6th.
Cuinica also announced that electoral campaign funding, which should have been distributed 21 days before the start of campaigns, had not yet been deposited. According to the electoral calendar, the disbursement of funds for the campaigns should take place from June 28th to August 31st.
The CNE plans to make 260 million meticais (€3.8 million) available to parties, political groups and presidential candidates in the October 9 elections, Cuinica told Lusa in June.
Without disclosing the exact amount, the CNE spokesperson acknowledged that the body still had a shortfall in the budget for the electoral process, stating that work was underway to resolve the problem.
“What we are fulfilling our responsibility. We are working and we believe that the Ministry of Economy and Finance is also working to find the money to cover the entire cost of the electoral process,” Cuinica said.
Mozambique will hold presidential elections on October 9, simultaneously with the legislative elections and elections for governors and provincial assemblies.
