More than 22,000 people in Nipepe district, Niassa province, face water shortages as a result of supply constraints.
At the moment, the region’s 93 water supply sources do not cover the district’s nearly 57,000 inhabitants.
The director of Nipepe District Planning and Infrastructure Services, Gervásio Raitone, told Radio Mozambique that the situation was most critical in the villages of Metapua, Malachi, Muahage, Talala and Namijala, where the population had to use water from rivers, with all the attendant risk of contracting diseases.
Raifone said that in order to minimise the situation, the sinking of ten water boreholes was planned, covering 15,000 people. This is to be carried out with financing from DH-Mining Development, a Chinese company that operates in graphite mining locally,
Last year, the Provincial Directorate of Public Works and Housing sank five water boreholes in Nipepe district, benefiting 1,500 families.
