The General Commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique has apologised for the mistreatment of some of the population of the district of Macomia, in Cabo Delgado, by some officers of the corporation.
Bernardino Rafael’s apology comes two weeks after members of the population rebelled and clashed with the Defence and Security Forces over their alleged use of excessive force against civilians.
The General Commander told officers and residents of the Xinavane neighbourhood, in the district headquarters town of Macomia, that it was not the mission of the FDS to mistreat the population, but rather to protect them and live together in harmony and peace.
The PRM commander-in-chief reaffirmed that terrorism could only be defeated if the population and the defence and security forces worked together.

Meanwhile, the PRM commander-in-chief said in Macomia district that the police force would not rest until it found and held criminally responsible the main perpetrators of kidnappings in the country.
Speaking to members of the Defence and Security Forces fighting terrorism in the district, Rafael stressed that the perpetrators of this type of crime were acting from outside the country and wanted to enrich themselves at the expense of others.
He reiterated his appeal for the population to work together to put an end to kidnappings in Mozambique.
The PRM is awaiting approval of a law submitted to the Assembly of the Republic which will allow the police to investigate criminal cases in the same way as in other countries around the world.
