Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) has launched the 60th anniversary celebrations of its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FAVET), with activities including a series of lectures in schools in Maputo and other events publicising FAVET’s contribution to the country’s development, including a photography competition for students.
Before the ceremony this Wednesday (24-07), UEM rector Professor Manuel Guilherme Júnior planted a baobab tree, one of the most important and symbolic trees on the African continent.
Speaking at the official launch, Junior highlighted the commitment to training generations of qualified veterinarians who have been ensuring the health of animals in the country throughout FAVET’s 60 years.
The past six decades have seen research and extension projects with a major impact and influence on development policies in the area of veterinary science, but Junior acknowledged that this long history had not been all about victories.
There had been times when the faculty had faced difficulties in pursuing its mission, but the important thing was that these difficulties had been and continued to be overcome.
“Therefore, we are delighted today with the celebration of the faculty’s long history, which has been attended by generations of Mozambicans and which has grown and consolidated thanks to the commitment and dedication of all the staff who have always assumed their role, ensuring that the objectives set out each year are achieved,” Junior stressed.
For the Director of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Cesaltina Tchamo, the celebration of 60 years was an opportunity to reflect on the trajectory of FAVET, its achievements, accomplishments, skills and challenges that graduates face in their daily lives, meeting the demands of the national and international market.
Tchamo reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to quality training, innovative research and service to the community.
The launch of the celebrations was attended by individuals from the public and private sectors, as well as former directors of the faculty unit and the university community in general.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was inaugurated on July 24, 1964, with the introduction of the first veterinary course with only 12 students, of whom two were women.
Sixty years later, FAVET has 133 workers, including 52 teachers, all Mozambican and graduates of the faculty. It offers three courses and has 480 students, of whom 322 are women.
The 60th anniversary festivities take place under the motto “Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 60 years of training, research and extension in favour of one health and the development of the country”.
