Boxer Alcinda Panguana dos Santos and swimmer Matthew Lawrence will be the flag bearers of the Mozambique delegation at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, which starts on Friday, July 26th, and runs until August 11th.
The two were chosen from among the seven Mozambican athletes who will represent the country in the Olympics, namely Alcinda Panguana dos Santos and Tiago Muxanga, both from boxing, Deisy Nhaquile (sailing), Jacira Ferreira (judo), Steven Sabino (athletics) and Matthew Lawrence and Denise Doneli (swimming).
And because the choice had to be a woman and a man, Team Moçambique opted for the two athletes, who curiously have shown more progress in reaching as far as possible in the competition.
The seven athletes who will represent Mozambique at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are already in the Olympic Village after completing a training period of around 10 days on French soil.
Of these, five left Maputo with their respective coaches, namely Alcinda dos Santos, Tiago Muxanga, Deisy Nhaquile, Jacira Ferreira and Steven Sabino, while two others went from the countries where they are based to France, namely Matthew Lawrence, an Olympic scholarship holder in Portugal, and Denise Doneli, who lives in Italy.
Of the seven Mozambican athletes in Paris, only three qualified directly, namely boxer Alcinda dos Santos (-66 kg), sailor Deisy Nhaquile, in the Laser category, and judoka Jacira Ferreira (-42 kg).
The remaining four benefited from the Olympic universal places, which are awarded to countries that are unable to reach the minimum of six qualified directly for the competition, or to countries that are unable to qualify even one athlete.
Mozambique’s participation comprises a delegation of 35 people which includes, besides the seven athletes and four coaches, technical support members and sports leaders.
