The selection of young people to join the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM) continues to follow strict criteria based on the law and the supreme interest of the nation.
Despite terrorism in Cabo Delgado, which requires a constant allocation of human resources, particularly in the Northern Operational Theatre (TON), to allow for the refreshment of troops, the Ministry of National Defence says it has not deviated from its focus, that is, rigour in choosing those who will join the Armed Forces, especially because this allows young people who have the aptitude for the task to be selected, explained Ilídio Muhelo, deputy national director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Defence.
Muhelo, who spoke to ‘Noticias’ about the selection and classification tests now taking place across the country, states that the sector takes the choice of elements that will be integrated in the defence of national sovereignty seriously.
It is in this context that the Ministry of Defence gives priority to selection and classification tests, which take place after the military census and aim to subject young people to medical, written and physical fitness tests with the aim of determining their effective capacity to join the Armed Forces.
In addition to height, which must not be less than 1.55 metres, the tests also assess the formation of the lower and upper limbs, visual conditions and whether candidates have undergone major surgery. The candidate’s past in relation to drug use is another component analysed.
“These are strategic questions. Not all specialties require the 1.55 metre height. For example, in the Infantry it may even be 1.55 metre of height, but not for the Military Police, where conscript must be at least 1.73 metres tall; a military police officer serves to impose military discipline and enforce orders,” Muhelo explained.
Likewise, these tests also serve to facilitate placement in the Armed Forces according to the individual’s profile, since the Defence sector has several specialties. Thus, once testing is over, the young man can be considered fit or unfit, or even ordered to wait for a classification.
