The municipality of Maputo owes around 300 million meticais (€4.3 million) to waste collection companies, a situation that is causing the proliferation of waste in some areas, said the mayor of the Mozambican capital.
“It’s around 300 million meticais,” said Rasaque Manhique, in statements quoted today by the daily O País. “Naturally, some [creditors] understand, others don’t.”
Manhique admitted that the situation has resulted in “bins full of rubbish” but said that the municipality has “created mechanisms for collection.”
He said that the debt was inherited from the previous city executive, which left office earlier this year following the municipal elections last October.
The mayor said that negotiations are underway on debt relief, with a view to resuming normal cleaning services in the capital.
Manhique also expressed concern about the occupation of streets by informal vendors, arguing for the need to organise commerce.
“We need to organise the informal trade,” he said. “As you know, there are mothers and young people on the streets who need to make a living.”
