Visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor Leste, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, with his delegation, held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, Verónica Macamo, and Members of the Government of Mozambique, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in key sectors.
Participating in the talks on Wednesday at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Center in Maputo were the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edelvina Materula, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias and the Vice-Minister of Science and Technology and Higher Education, Edson Macuácua.
The bilateral meeting was held within the framework of the official visit of the President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, to Mozambique from 3 to 7 July this year, in response to the invitation of the Head of State of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi.
After the meeting, Minister Bendito Freitas reported that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, Verónica Macamo, expressed the Government of Mozambique’s readiness to work with the Government of Timor-Leste.
Although geographically the distance between Timor-Leste and Mozambique is great, Mozambique still asserts its willingness to support Timor-Leste in any area.
“Ministers and government delegates participated in this meeting, talking about key sectors such as health, education, defence, marine resources, natural resources and technology, very important to be able to cooperate in,” said Minister Bendito.
The minister added that the visit of President Jose Ramos-Horta to Mozambique will also see the signing of agreements between Timor-Leste and Mozambique in important sectors such as education, minerals (hydrocarbons and mines) and diplomatic policy.
In the area of education, it is necessary to develop more cooperation with the Government of Mozambique on CAFÉ schools including the justice sector, so as to contribute to the development of human capital in Timor-Leste in the future, said Bendito Freitas.
Minister Bendito expressed the will of the IX Constitutional Government led by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to further strengthen bilateral relations with Mozambique, especially in the Portuguese-speaking space of CPLP member countries.
In addition, the Government of Mozambique will also invite Timor-Leste to participate in the tourism exhibition to be held from 8 to 11 August this year in Mozambique.
Meanwhile, Minister Bendito Freitas was accompanied by Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Luís Miguel de Sousa Sequeira; Director-General for Africa Caribbean Affairs, Francisco Dionísio Fernandes ‘Mau-Kura’ and others.
