Spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in the city of Maputo, Leonel Muchina, confirmed the rescue, on Thursday, of businessman Muhammad Mayet, kidnapped in the city on Wednesday morning.
“The 45-year-old Mozambican of Asian origin is already back with his family. He would have been rescued yesterday,” said Muchina, referring requests for more details on the matter to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
One source suggested that the kidnappers had learned that the authorities already knew where they were holding their victim and were preparing a raid. They therefore fled, abandoning the victim at the scene. The latter, realizing his situation, escaped and returned to his family on his own.
Muchina affirmed that there were only two cases of kidnapping this week, including a failed attempt thwarted by the police. Regarding a third case, Muchina said it was not a kidnapping, raising the possibility that it was a SERNIC police operation.
“What I can confirm are the cases I mentioned,” Muchina insisted.
