The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, said today that the country’s figures on drug abuse and trafficking are “quite worrying”, warning of “more significant consumption” among young people.
“Drugs affect all social strata, but their consumption is more significant among young men,” the head of state said in a message on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
President Nyusi called on teenagers and young people to distance themselves from drugs and for addicts to seek treatment, also asking that parents and guardians monitor their children closely to prevent them from “falling into the networks of drug traffickers and consumers”.
“The data available in Mozambique regarding drug abuse and trafficking, including alcohol, are quite worrying, despite the notable increase in efforts for prevention and repression,” Filipe Nyusi said.
More than 2.5 tons of cocaine, heroin and cannabis were seized in Mozambique in 2023, an increase in the amount seized in 2022. The haul last year was worth €1,816 million, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office report consulted by Lusa.
“The profile of patients with mental and behavioural disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances in the country continues to be mainly made up of male patients aged between 21 and 30,” reads the report, which was sent to the Assembly of Republic.
For the President of Mozambique, collaboration between the competent structures and communities is key to fighting drug trafficking and consumption.
“As a Government, we will continue to pay attention to the fight against drugs because investing in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is investing in a healthy and harmonious Mozambique, today and in the future,” President Nyusi concludes.
The annual report of the Central Office for the Prevention and Combat of Drugs states that “a considerable increase in the number of arrests for international drug trafficking was recorded” in 2023, and that “traffickers have continued to seek to use the country to transit drugs to different parts of the world”.
In the context of the crime of drug consumption and trafficking, 923 people were detained by the Mozambican police in 2023, 64 of them women, numbers that represent a slight reduction compared to the previous year, with 306 being in preventive detention and 617 being condemned.
According to the report, drug traffickers in Mozambique use the Afghanistan – Pakistan – Pemba – Zambézia – Maputo – South Africa routes for the international trafficking of methamphetamines, heroin and amphetamines. In the case of cocaine, they use the route São Paulo – Addis Ababa – Maputo – South Africa.
Traffickers use suitcases, postal parcels or works of art, among others, to conceal drugs in Mozambique.
During 2023, 423 drug trafficking cases were registered in Mozambique, compared to 372 in the previous year. Of these, 336 cases saw defendants arrested.
