Mozambique: Global Fund to disburse almost 800 million dollars
Screen grab: Anti-Raptos Beira
A gang of six individuals this Wednesday kidnapped yet another businessman in the center of Maputo city, the Mozambican capital, a police spokesperson told Lusa.
“He was kidnapped at around 08:00 when he was opening his commercial establishment located between Karl Marx and Ho Chi Min avenues [center of Maputo]”, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Lionel Muchina said.
According to Muchina, one of the employees of the victim, a businessman of Asian origin, was shot in the foot during the kidnapping and was taken to Maputo Central Hospital.
“We are working with sources who witnessed the abduction and with Sernic [National Criminal Investigation Service] to rescue the victim as soon as possible,” Muchina added.
Lionel Muchina asked the population to be more vigilant in the neighbourhoods and report “abnormal movements” to the police, in order to identify a probable captivity place.
The Facebook page ‘Anti-Raptos Beira’ has identified the victim as Muhamad Mayet, owner of Papelaria Shelyns.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique recorded a total of 185 cases of kidnapping and at least 288 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in this type of crime since 2011, the Minister of the Interior announced in March.
The wave of kidnappings in Mozambique has affected businesspeople and their families, especially people of Asian descent, which the authorities believe requires reflection.
The majority of kidnappings committed in Mozambique are prepared outside the country, which makes combating this type of crime difficult, the Attorney General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili, said in April in parliament.
The majority of the masterminds live in South Africa, said the Attorney General.
