All administrative posts in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado, are partially abandoned due to terrorist attacks. The district government continues to operate in an improvised manner as a result of insecurity in the area, a situation confirmed by the district permanent secretary, Cristóvão Alberto.
Almost all villages and government institutions in Macomia’s three administrative posts have been abandoned and a large part of the population and public employees are concentrated in the district headquarters town.
“All the administrative [staff] in Macomia – I’m referring to Mucojo, Quiterajo and Chai – are still at the headquarters town, because [first] the security situation needs to be controlled and, from there, we move forward. After we have control over the entire posts and district, we will resume administration in these posts. The population is still with us at headquarters,” Alberto explained on Wednesday (19-06) at a press conference in Pemba.
After the terrorist attack on Macomia town on May 10th of this year, some of the population and government officials were forced to leave for safer areas and, to date, the security situation is still considered critical.
“While security is working, we are displaced for a while, but we are making trips back and forth. This is until security tells us to return permanently. And, as I said, when the higher structure of the province tells us to return to the district, we will do so,” Alberto continued.
The three administrative posts in Macomia have been abandoned for almost two years, and currently have the presence of only the Defence and Security Forces.
Alberto further said that Macomia district was gradually coming back to life after the last terrorist attack: “After the last terrorist attack, the district of Macomia is being reborn, Macomia is emerging from the turmoil. What we have to say is that our Mozambican force is on the ground working tirelessly in order to control the district in its entirety.”
