The circulation of passenger and freight trains on the Ressano Garcia and Goba railway lines, which connect Mozambique to South Africa and Eswatini, resumed last week, 13 days after being suspended to allow work to improve the safety and reliability of the lines to go ahead.
The information was confirmed by Emídio Bata, executive director of Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), who explained that all the objectives set were achieved.
“The rails that had to be removed were replaced, also the rail switches. In other words, everything that had to be done during this period was done, and the trains returned to circulating normally,” he announced.

Bata noted that the suspension of service had meant that around 35,000 tons of cargo were not transported on the lines each day, but said that CFM had put in place a recovery plan, without jeopardising passenger service.
He said that the biggest gains from the intervention were the improvement of the line and the rehabilitation of its cargo transport capacity.
The suspension impacted urban passenger transport between the Central Station and the towns of Boane and Matola-Gare, affecting around 8,000 passengers a day on the Ressano Garcia line in two trains per direction and just over 3,000 users of the Goba Corridor.
In terms of freight transport, the Ressano line suspension affected ten trains per day, in each direction. Four cargo trains a day were affected in the rail corridor connecting the Goba border post and neighbouring Eswatini.
