The President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, will pay state visits to Mozambique and Angola in July, in response to invitations from his counterparts in those Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP).
The trip, which will take place between July 1st and 13th, was approved on Tuesday by the Timorese national parliament with 35 votes in favour, 10 against and one abstention.
In May, José Ramos-Horta received letters of credential from the Angolan ambassador to Timor-Leste, José André de Lemos, the first PALOP member to open an embassy in the country.
Timor-Leste and Angola have signed several cooperation agreements, the latest in the areas of military assistance and oil.
“The time has come to reinforce this dynamic and exchange between our two countries. Within the scope of these agreements, areas of common interest will now be found and the contribution they could make to an ‘upgrade’ in the economy of both countries [developed],” the Angolan ambassador highlighted in May.
The ambassador of Mozambique to Timor-Leste and Indonesia, Belmiro José Malate, in February expressed, during a visit to Dili, his country’s readiness to support the Timorese authorities in training staff and Portuguese language teachers, and in the language sector generally.
