The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the country’s main opposition party, today alleged the use of state resources by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in the public presentation of Daniel Chapo, the Frelimo candidate in the presidential elections.
“Using state resources and paralysing institutions of the same state [the President of the Republic] takes the Frelimo candidate on a piggyback ride for public presentations, a practice which attacks the figure of the head of state, who should not be linked to private interests,” Renamo spokesperson José Manteigas stated, pointing out that the latest of these acts took place in Nhamatanda, Sofala province, on Monday.
José Manteigas was speaking at the announcement of the names of the list leaders of the main opposition party in the elections for the provincial assemblies, from which the provincial governors will emerge.
“We take this opportunity to express our rejection of the abusive use of public resources for political party purposes and we demand that the President of the Republic refrain from these practices, which jeopardise social harmony and plural coexistence,” Manteigas declared.
The Renamo spokesperson said that the presentation of the presidential candidate of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo, party in power) by the head of state was an example of trampling on the principle of fair, free and transparent elections.
Filipe Nyusi, who is also president of the ruling party Frelimo, has been presenting Daniel Chapo at rallies held for this purpose, but which coincide with working visits he carries out as President of the Republic.
Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including presidential elections, in which the current state president and leader of Frelimo will not compete, having reached the two-term limit set out in the Constitution.
The October polls include voting for the president, for the members of national parliament, as well as for provincial governors and their respective provincial assemblies.
