Government authorities in Niassa province have called for increased surveillance at Lake Niassa to prevent the movement of suspicious individuals.
The involvement of fishermen in such activity is described as “fundamental”, as they are the only group active almost twenty-four hours a day on that body of water.
The appeal was recently launched by the director of the Provincial Services of Economic Activities in Niassa, at a meeting on the preservation and conservation of the lake ecosystem.
Sónia Miquidade said that Lake Niassa may be susceptible to use as a corridor for migration or other nefarious purposes, as it shares borders with other countries.
Miquidade speculated that criminals could use the extensive coastline of Lake Niassa to support terrorist acts in the neighbouring province of Cabo Delgado.
Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania all border Lake Niassa, also called Malawi and Nyasa.
