Mozambican judicial structures are investigating three non-profit organisations [NPOs] on suspicion of terrorist financing.
According to the Terrorism Financing Risk Assessment report presented yesterday in Maputo, the suspicions relate mainly to dubious operations funded from abroad.
The document highlights that, despite the three cases under investigation, the involvement of organisations in terrorist financing overall is relatively low, Noticias reports.

At the launch of the report, the deputy national director of Legal and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Nunes, said that despite the report classifying NPO’s vulnerability to terrorist financing as low, it remained necessary to reinforce surveillance, awareness, and structured, continuous counselling aimed at prevention.
“These measures must be accompanied by improved registration and the creation of a properly structured multi-sectoral working group,” Nunes said.
He also noted that it was a government priority to ensure that organisations operated in a safe and trust-inspiring environment, free from terrorist financing or money laundering networks.
Benilde Nhalivilo, a civil society representative and member of the team that produced the report, stated that non-profit organisations were committed to preventing money laundering and terrorist financing.
